In the past two centuries, technology has changed our world more than it had in the previous two thousands. It has fundamentally changed the way we interact with others, and the way we think of ourselves as a society.

When we talk about digitalization the doors of imagination open inside our minds, wondering how our lives may be improved with all the wonderful technology that now surrounds us. Whether in the kitchen, or in the music we listen to or the phone calls we make, technology has made our lives easier on so many levels.

The world’s digitalization has had an undeniable impact in the social and scientific arenas. Smartphones, AI, and an unparallelled interconectivity in real time is some of the most noticeable day to day progress. Moreover, cures and diagnoses for diseases are being found and developed in record time as well. Technology and society are getting ever closer.

However, all those fascinating tools can be double edged, and some of them, like artificial intelligence, require continuous surveillance.

AI is normally hailed as the current peak of computer science and technological progress. However, many have raised the voice as to the dangers it may have against its own creators; some are science fiction, but some are based on weird behaviours AI has demonstrated to have such as making racist comments. That is why society’s ethical surveillance of AI matters is paramount to achieving a good relationship with technology.

We need to develop an ethical technology that is capable of making sure the progress we make is actually so; that is, that it focuses on productivity, and profit for businesses, but only if it is good for society, people, and the planet as a whole. We need processes to ensure we can do both.

This is particularly important for businesses. Though individual beings are also responsible for the relationship they wish to have with technology, businesses are the basis of our economic and social models. However, we must understand businesses not as abstract beings, but rather as groups of people that are working towards achieving a certain goal. That will allow us to incorporate an ethical mindset into the overall company, without disrupting their corporate needs, and what is more, empowering them, as new generations are more and more inclined towards choosing businesses that embrace social, corporate, and environmental responsibility.

That is why incorporating ethics into technology planning and development is not about limiting the progress of companies, but about helping them make better corporate decisions and develop better technology in their own benefit, and in the benefit of all of us.

That is what the Ethical Consulting service we offer at X eleva Group is all about.
